Ken Martin (born 1973) is an American Democratic politician and strategist from Minnesota. He earned his B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Kansas in 1996. His passion for public service began early, volunteering for the late Senator Paul Wellstone’s 1990 campaign, which ignited a lifelong commitment to Democratic values. In the early 1990s, he organized college campuses for the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign and later worked in Kansas to support Democratic candidates before returning home to Minnesota to take on party leadership roles.
Back in Minnesota, Martin played key roles in major initiatives and campaigns. In 2008, he led the campaign for the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, a landmark measure that dedicated funding to environmental conservation, parks, and the arts. He also managed Democrat Mark Dayton’s gubernatorial recount effort in 2010, helping secure Dayton’s victory as Governor of Minnesota. In 2011, Martin was unanimously elected Chair of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) Party. Under his leadership, the party has transformed into a strong, year-round grassroots organization. As of February 2025, Ken Martin is also the Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), bringing his effective leadership to the national stage.
Turning Minnesota Blue: Martin implemented a strategy to build the party to win and last, leading the DFL to regain control of both state legislative chambers in 2012. Since Martin took the helm, Minnesota Democrats have won every statewide election and achieved multiple Democratic “trifectas” (control of the governorship and both legislative chambers) in the state.
Progressive Policy Victories: Under Martin’s leadership, Minnesota became the first state to defeat a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2012 and also rejected a voter ID amendment that could have restricted voting access.
National Leadership: Martin’s success in Minnesota earned him recognition on the national stage. In 2017, he was elected President of the Association of State Democratic Committees and served as a Vice Chair of the DNC. In February 2025, he became Chair of the Democratic National Committee, leading the party’s national efforts.
Fighting for Workers and Unions: Martin is a strong advocate for labor unions and working-class families. He believes the Democratic Party must recommit to being the party of working people and ensure fair wages and workers’ rights.
Social Equality and Inclusion: Martin has championed civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and racial equality, ensuring diverse representation within the Democratic Party.
Voting Rights and Democracy: Martin played a key role in defeating a restrictive voter ID law in Minnesota and continues to fight for expanding voting access nationwide.
Environmental Stewardship: As the leader of the campaign for Minnesota’s Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, he has shown a commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.
As of 2025, Ken Martin has not announced a candidacy for the U.S. presidency, focusing instead on strengthening the Democratic Party nationwide. However, in his role as DNC Chair, he has articulated a clear vision for America’s future. His “Build to Win, Build to Expand, Build to Last” strategy invests in Democratic organizing in all 57 states and territories, contesting races at every level. Martin’s leadership prioritizes fairness, opportunity, and justice, ensuring that the Democratic Party remains a powerful force for progress in America.
Ken Martin’s extensive experience, dedication to Democratic values, and strategic vision continue to shape the party’s future and help build a more inclusive and equitable America.
